Castle on a Hill - Red Mallee Burl
This Castle on a Hill is made from a Red Mallee Burl. A spikey piece that looks similar to coral when closed and like a castle on rocky cliff when open. Red mallee usually grows in arid parts of Australia. A burl is a growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is usually found on the trunk and sometimes underground in the form of a rounded outgrowth. It is caused by some kind of stress, such as injury, virus, fungus, insect infestation or mold growth.
It stands 15cm high when open and is 16cm wide.
